CyanogenMod 7.0 Android 2.3 Custom ROM adds tablets‎ support

The latest version of the CyanogenMod custom build of Android is available, and CyanogenMod 7.0 is the first to officially support Android tablets. The new release currently supports thirty devices and, according to project leader Cyanogen’s release announcement, includes support for several tablets, such as the B&N Nook Color. There are also some features of version 6.x (CM6) which have not been integrated with CM7; Cyanogen says that these features are scheduled for 7.1.

CM7 is based on the open source Google Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread operating system. The software is designed to work on tablets as well as smartphones and currently supports more than 30 devices including the Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor and ViewSonic gTablet.

Included in the list of Android devices CyanogenMod7 supports are, the HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD, HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Tattoo, Google Nexus S, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC Wildfire, HTC legend, HTC Aria, T-Mobile G2, Motorola Droid, HTC EVO 4G and HTC EVO Shift 4G and more.

Here are a few of the features you get with CM7:

  • Root access
  • Support for installing more apps to your SD card
  • CPU frequency and scaling controls
  • Lockscreen gestures
  • Incognito mode for the Android web browser
  • Theme switcher
  • Restyled music app and new music widgets
  • Now playing and album art on the lock screen
  • Battery percentage icon in the status bar
  • Calendar enhancements

The tablet specific versions of CM7 feature a Tablet Tweaks menu in the settings allowing you to access a number of tablet-specific settings in one place. You can also use long-press actions on the volume buttons to make up for the lack of physical buttons on some tablets such as the NOOKcolor. For instance, you can map these button presses to bring up home, back, or menu functions.
