Windows Update for Evernote adds Note Sharing, Social Collaboration, Tools for Writers
Evernote, the powerhouse note-taking software suite and service released a huge update for Windows users today. The upgrade allows Windows users to share with others selected notes (including images) that they’ve created in Evernote via Facebook, Twitter, and email without leaving the application.
Perhaps the biggest aspect of the update is the inclusion of social sharing. “Evernote, historically, has not been social — at all,” says Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote. “You go to Facebook when you fell like not being productive. You go to Evernote when you actually feel like getting something accomplished. That’s been our position.”
Users will find a share button inside each note with four options: send by email, post to Facebook, post to Twitter and copy note URL to clipboard. The Windows app user can then select an option to share the individual note, making its contents public to outside viewers. The process is similar to that already introduced in Evernote for Web.
For the people who are not familiar with the application, Evernote helps people remember everything by letting them to save text, web pages, photos or screen shots in a web-based document. The application makes it easy to organize documents in notebooks and search them using keywords, titles and tags.
Frequent Evernote users will understand immediately the significant implications of these layers of sharing. Evernote, once merely a repository of personal memories, can become a vehicle to create shared memories. Somewhat problematic, however, is that each version of Evernote — spanning web, mobile and desktop — now has a slightly different sharing experience.
There are other features that come along with today’s update (such as improved Firefox syncing), and some bug fixes were taken care of as well. Those who use Evernote on the Windows platform have plenty to be happy with, and the application has made great strides on the platform with what they’ve added in this update.
