2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Unveiled; to debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new 2012 SLS AMG Roadster Convertible Car and this time Gullwing doors and and fixed roof are no more, the Car has traditional entry-ports and a folding cloth soft top instead. scalped version of AMG’s finest has been revealed ahead of its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show this coming September 13.
The Car is still under development and testing but Mercedes says that Most work has been completed. You still get the aluminium spaceframe as in the coup’, but because it loses the gullwing doors the side sills have been made ‘robust’. Though the aluminum spaceframe was originally developed with both a coupe and convertible in mind, Benz engineers added beefier side-skirts to the roadster. This allows for improvements in both crash performance and overall rigidity. Further aiding in the quest for increased strength, a cross-member that supports the dashboard was given additional bracing at both the window frame and transmission tunnel. Despite this increased rigidity, the bodyshell of the SLS AMG Roadster weighs just five pounds more than the bodyshell of the SLS AMG Coupe.
The soft-top has three layers, takes 11 seconds to open and close and the entire contraption is made of magnesium, steel and aluminium. It’s also been tested to oblivion (it’s been closed 20,000 times on a stationary test rig) and is designed for speeds of up to 196mph with ‘no intrusive flapping, booming, hissing, clattering or howling’.
