Motorola Droid X2 release date officially confirmed on May 26th; priced as $299 with 2-year contract

After much speculation the release date for the successor to the Droid X, the Droid X2, has been made official and as expected it will be in stores May 26 with pre-orders beginning a week earlier. As the Droid X2 has the exact same industrial design as the DROID X that debuted last July, but with updated internals and screen technology.

The Droid X2 will be available online starting May 19 and in stores on May 26 for $199.99 with a two-year contract, replacing the aging Motorola Droid X. As the successor to the Droid X, the X2 ups the ante with a 4.3-inch, scratch-resistant qHD touch screen and a dual-core 1GHz processor–Verizon’s first.

Unfortunately, the X2 runs Android 2.2 Froyo – but worry not, it will be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread sometime after launch.

The Android 2.2 device (upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread) also has an 8-megapixel camera with continuous auto focus, and Motorola says the camera delivers 44 percent faster shot-to-shot performance than its predecessor. In addition, it’s capable of HD video capture, and the Droid X2 has HDMI output with Mirror Mode, so you can view and share photos, videos, and downloaded movies on your HD TV.

With its scratch-resistant and anti-reflective qHD 4.3″ display the Droid X2 boasts a dual-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. There’s no front-facing camera but it does have an 8mp camera that can record 1080p HD video and it can also function as a 3G hotspot for up to five devices. It’s all powered by a 1540mAh battery which is expected to offer 8 hours of talk time. In many its very similar to its predecessor with the main improvement being a general increase in speed.

The most interesting part of the DROID X2 is not what it has, but what is missing from it. It lacks a front-facing camera and does not have support for Verizon’s rapidly expanding 4G LTE network. Neither does it have global roaming capabilities.
