Samsung Galaxy S2 priced $510; now available from Amazon UK
One of the hottest new smartphones to come out of this year will no doubt be the Samsung Galaxy S II or S2. The most anticipated Android smartphone of the year, the Samsung Galaxy S2, is finally on sale! The dual-core Android 2.3 Gingerbread packing smartphone is now available for order on Amazon UK with a price tag of £509.99 (unlocked).
Its impressive specification includes a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED plus display, 8-megapixel camera, a dual core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of internal storage, microSD-support and Samsung’s updated TouchWiz 4.0 UI.
The Galaxy S2 is also one of the thinnest phones available at 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm. It weighs just 116g and is perfectly proportioned with smooth rounded edges. It’s a big phone, but, unlike HTC’s Desire HD, it doesn’t feel particularly large in your hand despite its huge 4.3-inch display.
If you are looking for an ultra slim mobile phone then there is very little to choose between these two very sleek models. On its launch the iPhone 4 was heralded as the slimmest phone available but that was several months ago and now handsets such as the Motorola Atrix and this Samsung handset have sneaked ahead in this department. The difference is literally less than a millimetre and I am sure neither model will disappoint if you held either of them in the palm of your hand.
There is quite a large difference in screen size between these two models so the width and heigh measurements are obviously considerably more on the Samsung thanks to its massive 4.3 inch display compared to the 3.5 inch screen fitted on the iPhone. Looking at styling the Apple phone does not stray to far from the tried and trusted format that has seen such products become a hit with consumers. The S2 on the other hands steps away from the curves found on the original Galaxy handset and replaces them with a much more angular design which although is not as instantly attractive as the iPhone still holds great appeal.
The interest for the new Samsung has been staggering with many of our readers asking when the phone would be released and how they are happy to wait for its launch. If we just revert back to AmazonUK for one moment, we can tell you that the Galaxy S2 page has the handset listed to be in stock on May 21st so just a matter of days to wait.
While it was a early production model, the TouchWiz 4.0 UI running over Google’s Android Gingerbread OS was impressive and the home screen manager totally refreshed to be made more appealing.
There’s a microUSB port on the bottom for charging and syncing with your PC, and on top there’s a 3.5mm jack plug which will work with any set of headphones. There’s no HDMI-out as on LG’s Optimus 2X, unfortunately, so you’ll have to make do with the Galaxy S2’s DLNA capabilities for sharing content wirelessly across a home network.
The fact that the Samsung Galaxy S2 has snagged 3 million pre-orders is no wonder. With a dual-core processor, the Android phone is ultra-quick, leaving no room for lagging or skipping frames during games, for example.
Maybe the fact that the iPhone 5 will be released this autumn isn’t that bad for Apple, as they get to study every move their opponents will have made.
