2012 Mercedes Benz SLK55 AMG Details revealed; gets 422HP 5.5-liter V8
It has been on rumor what will be under the hood for the 2012 Mercedes Benz SLK 55 AMG, seems that the new road runner will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2011 this fall, now we have first details of power house that will move the Mercedes Benz SLK AMG.
The roadster will be powered by new 5.5 liter BiTurbo V8 engine, Compared to the previous V8, output has increased by 62HP to 422-horses while peak torque is up from 510 to 540Nm (U.S. spec model: 415HP at 6,800 rpm and 398 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm). it will not be as powerful as the engines in the CLS 63 and the E 63, giving space to numerous tuners upgrading the V8. With this engine the 2012 SLK55 AMG has a 0.44 kg/hp power to weight ratio.
It is expected that 2012 model will be 30 percent more efficient than its predecessor using Start/Stop technology and a system called AMG Cylinder Management system, which automatically shuts off four of the engine’s eight cylinders under partial load. Mercedes says that the switch from four to eight-cylinder operation is “immediate and imperceptible” taking a mere 30 milliseconds at 3,600 rpm.
Finally, the engine is also fitted with a sports exhaust system with integrated flaps. This allows the car to run relatively quiet at low speeds and much louder once the driver dials up the revs. According to the Germans, the new SLK 55 AMG returns a combined fuel consumption of 8.5 lt/100 km.
