Acer Travelmate 8481 G priced at £699, releasing in August, Specs revealed

One of the items Acer had on display at the Computex convention in Taiwan earlier this year was its TravelMate 8481 notebook. Acer has announced the UK availability of the latest in its TravelMate range of portable business notebooks.

It’s a rig that Acer calls a “true road warrior,” mixing a slim-and-light body with fairly stout innards. It’s a fairly understated design; classic and classy, as they say. It features a 2nd-gen Intel Core processor (besting the prior model by around 60% in terms of raw performance), and Intel’s HD Graphics 3000. Those aren’t powerful enough to run today’s latest and greatest games, but it should be plenty for the mobile pro who just needs to handle Excel sheets and the occasional 720p media clip.

Acer only provided us a general description of the hardware and features in and around the TravelMate 8481, which at its foundation includes a second generation Intel Core processor armed with Intel HD Graphics 3000. Discrete graphics featuring Nvidia’s Optimus technology will also be available.

Other bullet points include up to a 320GB hard drive or 64GB mSATA SSD, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, GbE LAN, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, up to 9 hours of battery life, and Acer’s DustDefender technology that works via a smart reversing mechanism in the cooling fan to push the dust out.

The TravelMate 8481 has a magnesium-aluminium chassis, aimed to make it more resilient to knocks and bumps and features metal hinges – a common weak point of laptop design. The 8481 also has an anti-shock hard drive enclosure, and an anti-dust system, aimed at keeping the cooling systems clear and effective. To ensure security, the new laptop has been equipped with features like Disk Anti-Shock Protection, which offers all around suspension of the hard disk, and the fingerprint technology that will allow only the owner to gain access to the laptop.

The TravelMate 8481 will be available at the end of August and will start out at £699 (excluding VAT).
