Motorola Milestone XT720 Froyo 2.2 Update released today by Cincinnati Bell

Motorola Milestone XT720 Froyo 2.2 Update released today by Cincinnati Bell

We all know that Motorola dumped Milestone XT720, by not pushing a single Android update to the device, it was released with Android 2.1 and still remains on that. But, US telecom operator Cincinnati Bell has released the Android 2.2 update for the Motorola Milestone XT720 — and long with it, a tool to root the thing.

Cincinnati Bell didn’t wait around for Motorola to issue their OEM upgrade to Android 2.2 for the Milestone XT720. Instead they have released their own ROM for installation on the device, and in an unprecedented move for a carrier they have included the tools you will need to root your freshly updated handset. In fact, it looks like the only way to install the update is by first rooting your device before flashing the ROM. Included is an Android Commander program that utilizes SuperOneClick to grant super user access and includes Titanium Backup.

The process that Cincinnati Bell outlines for installing the update reads like a manual for installing a custom ROM, which should hardly be surprising considering how outside-the-box this update is. From rooting your Milestone, to using Titanium Backup to save your files, this is not your friendly OTA Android update. Cincinnati Bell is clear from the get-go that this task isn’t for everyone, but its helpful guides and videos should go a long way to making the update accessible to anyone with some basic technical competency. Get through it all, and you’ll breathe some new life into your Milestone XT720 thanks to Android 2.2.

CB has tried to make to process as easy as possible but if you are not ready for all this, you can remain with Android 2.1 and enjoy the phone.

We suppose that’s what happens with a carrier eager to satisfy their customers despite lack of support from the OEM. It certainly isn’t the easiest update process imaginable (no OTA here), but CinciBell has done their best to make it as painless as possible.
