Official iPhone app for Google+ released; available to download now

Official iPhone app for Google+ released; available to download nowGoogle said that it would be coming and sure enough, it is here. The Google+ application for the iPhone has arrived so if you own one of those spiffy iOS-powered handhelds, you can head to the App Store right now and scoop it up. Google has just released the official Google+ app for iPhone on the App Store. The app is free, and at the moment of writing this Google hasn’t updated its Mobile webpage to showcase the new app yet.

Although the application doesn’t mentions that it works on iPad, and it only says Compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. Requires iOS 3.1 or later, we are assuming it will work fine on iPad’s as well. Below are the features of the application according to Apple’s App Store. While the Google+ Android app was ready to go on day one, the Google+ iPhone app had remained in review with Apple. Until now, iPhone users have had to access a mobile web version of Google+ in Safari, which wasn’t nearly as feature-filled as the Android app.

It appears that the iPhone app and Android app are fairly similar in functionality except for the instant upload feature that is included in the Android app. Instant Upload automatically uploads videos and photos to your Google+ album in the cloud.

The Google+ iOS app provides a native interface to access much of the functionalities of the website, such as the Huddle group messaging feature — which was previously exclusive to Android devices prior to the app’s approval. The dashboard of the Google+ presents a grid of icons to access the Stream, Huddle, Photos, your Profile and Circles, as well as a Notification tab at the bottom that will open a vertical list of all your incoming notifications. Whilst much of the navigation seems to rely on web views optimized for the iPhone, and fetched by the device, the animations when switching between sections are quite snappy and fast on iOS 4. Just like on the desktop, the Stream provides recent updates from the people you follow and your Circles, allowing you to check for new post with the popular “pull to refresh gesture” and comment or +1 others’s posts. You can’t +1 from the home page — you have to open a single post and hit the + button in the upper right corner, while a text field at the bottom will let you leave a comment. You can also “mute” or “report” a post. The app is capable of sending push notifications for new comments, shares, and so forth.

Google+ for mobile makes sharing the right things with the right people a lot simpler. Huddle lets you send super-fast messages to the people you care about most. And no matter where you are, the stream lets you stay in the loop about what your friends are sharing and where they’re checking in.

* Circles let you share the right things with just the right people.
* Stream is where you can get updates from your circles or see what people are saying about things nearby.
* Huddle is super-fast group messaging for everyone in your circles.
