Samsung Nexus S 4G release date for AT&T on July 24; Priced at $100, pre-order now
It looks like AT&T customers are finally getting an easy, subsidized way to get a Samsung Nexus S that plays friendly with the right 3G frequencies. Samsung on Thursday announced that an AT&T-ready version of its Nexus S smartphone will be available from Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile Stores beginning on July 24th for $99.99 on contract.
Already available through T-Mobile and Sprint, the Nexus S runs stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features a 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, NFC support, a 5-megapixel camera, and a front-facing VGA camera. You’ll also find the standard wireless options–Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS–but like the T-Mobile version, it’s 3G only.
The interesting part: as far as I can tell, AT&T isn’t actually a part of all this. Samsung’s very careful to say that the handset is “optimized for AT&T frequencies” in the press release, but then makes no other mention of the carrier’s involvement — at the least, they usually have some generic quote from the carrier talking about how excited they are. It looks like Samsung might have gone straight to Best Buy Mobile, with the Big Blue Box finding a reason to front the difference for the subsidy.
The Nexus S offers a “pure Google” experience and is the first device to get new Android updates. It runs Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread), is powered by a 1GHz processor and is equipped with a 4-inch Super AMOLED Contour display, a 5-megapixel camera, a forward-facing VGA camera for video chat, and a 1,500 mAh battery good for up to 6.5 hours of talk time. Pre-orders for the Nexus S for AT&T begin today. Read on for the full press release:
