RIM’s new BBX Smartphone and Tablet OS announced at DevCon

RIM's new BBX Smartphone and Tablet OS announced at DevConRIM has finally announced its next operating system for its Smartphone and tablet named BBX , the new BBX OS will offer support for apps developed for the previous BlackBerry OS 6 and OS 7. According to RIM, BBX combines “the best of BlackBerry and the best of QNX”. The company announced the OS at RIM’s annual DevCon started this morning.

The platform is coming with POSIX and you can build flexible new apps with its native SDK. Because BBX uses the same source code found on BlackBerry OS 6 and OS 7 and  HTML5 apps that work on either of those two will work on BBX. The new OS also supports Adobe Air and Flash apps and even Android apps thanks to the BlackBerry Runtime for Android software module.

For the security concern, the  new OS  has EAL4+ and SIL3 security certifications and you know that the BlackBerry PlayBook is is the first ever tablet certified for government use. RIM has also announced the PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta this includes the BlackBerry Runtime for Android apps which allows developers to bring their Android apps compatible with the RIM tablet as well as supports for Adobe Air 3.0 and Flash 11, as well as WebGL (hardware accelerated graphics for the web browser).

If you are serious, Gamrer, you also have good news from RIM, the company is on its way to release a cross-platform SDK called Marmalade that helps to port code, so you can play ported Games from other platforms on the new OS. DevCon showed ported games such as Tomb Raider and The Guardian of Light, Dead Space, Need for Speed, etc.

BBX OS UI is based on Cascades framework developed by The Amazing Tribe and the company has released a video for its demonstration that is below.Cascades also offers flexible list layouts and 3D support.  It’s expected that The adopters of the PlayBook won’t be disappointed as stuff like that will breathe life in the QNX-based slate.
