OmniVision introduces OV16820 / 16825 16MP Sensors; shoot 4k videos
The sensors are capable of shooting videos at 4k2k (3840 x 2160) resolution that also know as Quad Full High Definition – QFHD at 60 frames per second and 30fps in burst mode. The sensors measure 1/2.3″ and uses OmniVision’s OmniBSI-2 technology with 1.34 micro pixel pitch.
The OV16820 sensor is made into a ceramic grid array and looks more for DSLR cameras while the OV16825 more likely to make its way into Smartphones in the near future. The OmniVision sensors support on-chip pixel binning (2×2 and 3×3) and resampling that helps to improve the quality if the needed resolution is much lower than the sensor resolution, so it could work for 1080p and 720p videos.
But when it comes to 4k resolution at 60fps, t is hard to say when it will make its way into Smartphones when we consider the current standards of Smartphones and its processing power. 4k videos needs a processing four times as many pixels as FullHD (especially at 60fps) and it is too much for current chipset. Anyway, it doesn’t mean we couldn’t see such chipset with 4k processing power in the near future, so stay tuned till we hear something about it.
