A while ago, Microsoft announced its new Windows Phone 8 with many new features including support for multi-core processor and microSD card. Since then, WP fans all over the world had been waiting to see the first lineup of Windows Phone 8 smartphones. And finally, Samsung announced the first Windows Phone 8 named Samsung Ativ S at IFA 2012 utilizing many of Windows Phone 8 features, while Nokia announced its two Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices couple of days ago. The new Nokia devices include higg-end Nokia Lumia 920, successor to the Lumia 900 and brand new Lumia 820 for those who are looking for a mid-range WP8 device. Another company we expect soon to join the battle is HTC, HTC is expected to announce its Windows Phone 8 devices at an event on September 19.
Design-wise, Nokia Lumia devices look more aesthetic, but certainly Samsung’s Ativ S is also a premium device and looks almost like Galaxy s smartphones. Samsung Ativ S has a metallic finish on the back with a cool elements like speaker grill, while Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 feature Polycarbonate unibody and come in several colors for you to choose from.
When it comes to specs, both Samsung and Nokia have integrated new Windows Phone 8 features with their smartphones, but certainly each of them differentiate one another in features. For example, Samsung Ativ S and Lumia 820 have microSD card slot while Lumia 920 comes with built-in 32GB storage without microSD card slot. Lack of microSD card slot on Lumia 920 is certainly a disadvantage compared to other two devices.
Under the hood, three of the Windows Phone 8 smartphones are powered by same 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, while using different display technology. Nokia Lumia 920 is coming with ClearBlack PureMotionHD+ LCD while Samsung Ativ S and Lumia 820 feature Super AMOLED and AMOLED displays respectively. One of the highlighted features besides its display on Lumia 920 is its camera, in megapixel count, all are same 8MP, but Nokia has integrated its PureView technology with Lumia 920. Those who are looking for a powerful camera oriented WP8 smartphone will certainly see it as advantage on Lumia 920.
In terms of connectivity, Lumia 920 and 820 have LTE and NFC, while Samsung Ativ S offers HSDPA plus WiFi hotspot and NFC. Both Nokia and Samsung windows Phone 8 feature other usual connectivity feature as well. On Lumia 920, you have USB-on-the-go support.
When it comes to battery, Samsung is one step ahead with beefy 2300mAh battery while Lumia 920 and 820 only have a 2000mAh and 1650mAh batteries respectively. Nokia says battery life on Lumia 920 will last 10 hours on 3G , but it is yet to be seen. While comparing, all of these three smartphones share several same features while each of them has its of features to compete with each other.
In the market, pricing of the smartphones is very important aspect, but unfortunately both Nokia and Samsung haven’t announced any details regarding to pricing and release date, but rumors suggest an October-release.
