ASUS PadFone 2 to be released in December; Specs, Price
After couple of leaks, ASUS has unveiled its most anticipated Android monster PadFone 2. The hybrid device equipped with powerful specs under the hood, is the second generation of its PadFone. As expected the tablet cum phone was unveiled at the event in Taiwan. The device comes with a lot of changes in design as well as specifications under the hood.
The PadFone station has got much changes for good, the company has slimmed it down, making sure the mobility. Instead of sliding the phone into a cage, this time you can dock it vertically on the rear side and the phone will be safe there exposed and you are good to go with the tablet.
In design, the PadPhone look similar to its predecessor, but changes are on specs. The ASUS PadFone 2 is powered by powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 processor like LG Optimus G along with 2GB of RAM. The device sports huge 4.7″-inch 720p IPS LCD with boosted brightness of up to 550 nits, using Sharp’s IGZO technology and protected by Corning Fit Glass.
The smartphone has a 13MP camera on the rear side, with a f/2.4 BSI sensor from Sony. The camera is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30fps, and 720p at 60fps, and it can make as many as 100 continuous shots at the full resolution. The phone has also a got a 1.2MP front-facing camera for video calls.
The PadFone 2 also features NFC and other usual connectivity features, and has a fixed 2,140mAh battery. The global version will come with WCDMA 900/2,100MHz radios and LTE at 800/1,800/2,600MHz bands but ASUS is expected to bring specific models for markets like US . ASUS PadFone is running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, but the company has promised Jelly Bean update.
What makes the PadFone different from the phones out there is its docking station that transforms the phone into a complete10.1 Android tablet. The tablet dock has the same 10.1-inchdisplay with 1280 x 800 resolution and an additional 5,000mAh battery. The docking station comes with a 13-pin connector, which is compatible with microUSB. The PadFone station weighs 1.13 lbs (514g), while 1.43 lbs (649g) with the phone docked.
When it comes to pricing, the ASUS PadFone 2, 32GB with tablet station will cost you €799, while €899 for 64GB model. The 16GG variant will be priced around €699. in Asia, the PadFone and the tablet station will be sold separately, the station will cost you NT$8,990 ($310). Unsubsidized PadFone 2 will be sold at NT$17,990 ($620) and NT$21,901 ($750) for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively. Anyway, if you buy the tablet dock and the phone together, the dock will cost you only NT$6,000 (around $210).
ASUS PadFone 2 will be available in three variations, 32GB and 64GB while 16GB coming later. The Europe and Asia will be the first to get the new PadFone. The list goes like Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Sweden in Europe while Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and U.A.E in Asia. US release was not mentioned, but ASUS manager has reportedly confirmed that the device will hit the US by the end of this year. The PadFone launch date is set to early December for Europe and Asia.
