iPad mini vs Nexus 7 vs Kindle Fire HD; Specs Comparison

Finally Apple has filled the gap there had been for while, launching its new iPad mini, Ever since the Apple launched its first iPad, many other companies like Samsung and HTC have introduced 7 inch tablets in the market, now 7 inch tablet market is mainly dominated by the Android devices, Apple had to launch 3 iPads to bring its mini version but those who have wished an iPad in comfortable size, at least smaller than the iPad will certainly find it worthy. In the market, the device is going to rival the dominant Android devices, especially recently released Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD.  Consumers ( except Apple’s fans) who want a tablet worth shelling out bucks certainly need to look at the features of  devices before getting it, so let’s make a spec to spec comparison of iPad with Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7.

The iPad mini is certainly not a 7 inch device, Apple doesn’t want it to be too small , but rather big enough to do things. The iPad mini is 7.9-inch tablet while the Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD are exact 7 inch devices. But I don’t think that .9 inch has a lot to offer on the screen, but when it comes to design, the iPad mini certainly looks more aesthetic than the Nexus 7 with plastic chassis while the Kindle Fire HD looks more sturdy.

Apple iPad mini is slimmer at 7.2mm think while the Google Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD are thicker at 10.45mm and 10mm respectively. Apple even went on saying that the iPad mini is slimmer than a pencil but Do you  think that a slightly thicker like Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 are uncomfortable to hold in your hand and use? I don’t think so. Some people may even find slightly thicker devices like Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD more enjoyable  as well as comfortable to hold.

Weight of  iPad mini and Nexus 7 are almost same, a slight different though, the iPad mini  and Google nexus 7 weigh at 312 g and 340g respectively while the Kindle Fire HD has a 395g weight.

In terms of specs, Apple iPad mini is powered by a Dual-core A5 processor, while the Google Nexus 7 has NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-core processor. The Kindle Fire HD is also powered by Dual-core processor, but According to the Amazon, the processor outperforms the Tegra 3, with 40% more memory bandwidth than Tegra 3. For graphics, you have ULP GeForce @ 416MHz on Nexus 7 while the iPad mini and Kindle Fire HD feature PowerVR SGX543 and PowerVR SGX540 @ 384 MHz respectively. Both Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 have 1GB of RAM while the iPad mini RAM is yet to be confirmed.

iPad mini features wider 7.9 inch display with 1024 x 768  resolution while the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 have 7 inch 1280 x 800 displays. Pixel density is higher on the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD, 216 PPI while iPad mini only has 163 PPI. All are featuring same display technology, IPS LCD.

In the camera department, iPad mini has more to offer, Apple has added 5MP camera to the rear side of iPad mini, capable of shooting 1080 videos, while the Nexus 7  and Kindle Fire HD lack rear camera. There are front-facing cameras on three of them, capable of shooting 720p videos. iPad mini and Nexus 7  feature 1.2MP camera while the Kindle Fire HD has 1.3MP camera. It seems like Apple  added rear camera to show it as an advantage before Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD. But there will still  be those finding it not a big deal as long as they use smartphones with powerful camera.

Apple iPad mini comes in two versions, WiFi-only and LTE enabled models. Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD don’t even have 3G support let alone 4G LTE. You have WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity on all tablets. iPad mini features Bluetooth 4.0 while the Nexus 7 Bluetooth 3.0. Anyway, an upgraded version of the Google Nexus 7 is expected soon, perhaps it will come with LTE support not confirmed though. You also have NFC on Nexus 7  but the iPad mini and Kindle Fire HD don’t feature it.

Storage and Battery

iPad comes in three variants of storage, you have 16, 32 and 64GB version while the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD are only available in two models, 16GB and 32GB Kindle Fire HD while there are 8GB and 16GB versions of Nexus 7. Nexus 7 32GB version is expected to be released soon.

iPad mini has a single cell battery promised to last 10 hours per charge while Google Nexus 7 has 4325 mAh battery good for 9 hours, 10 hours in paper.

Pricing is an important factor when it comes to the success of a tablet in a tight market. iPad mini is a little bigger and offers extra features like rear camera unlike the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 but you certainly have to throw a little more bucks for that, Whereas, Nexus 7  boasts its power with NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor under the hood and available for more cheaper and affordable price, if screen size and rear camera are not a big deal, certainly Nexus 7 is a better option. If you are looking for a little bigger as well as more featured device, then go for iPad mini. If you are  into an LTE version, you may also want to look at the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 inch version with LTE support, so you get bigger device  for almost same price of the iPad mini LTE.

Apple iPad mini WiFi price starts at $329 for 16GB, $429 for 32GB Wi-Fi, and $529 for 64GB iPad mini. Google Nexus 7 price starts $199 for 8GB version and  $249 for 16GB while the Kindle Fire HD priced at  $199 for 32GB, $249 for 32GB tablet.

Apple iPad mini LTE  version also available in 3 variants, $459  for 16GB, $559 for 32GB, and $659 for 64GB. On the other hand, Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch tablet with LTE support is priced at $499 for 32GB version while $599 for 64GB version. However, choosing between these or other devices are based on your taste, needs and budget, so which one would you buy?
