Along with Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet , Sony has also announced a couple of smartphones on the Xperia lineup dubbed Xperia Z2, second generation of its flagship Xperia Z1 and a mid-end Xperia M2 at MWC 2014. Both smartphones share almost similar design at the firstt glance except the rear camera on the M2 is located top middle while the Xperia Z2 has its camera placed on the top left corner. In terms of specs both have noticeable differences.
Design-wise, the Xperia Z2 is exactly the same as Z1 but it is slightly bigger than its predecessor, with 5.2″ display of Triluminos IPS technology powered by same Bravia tech used in Sony’s TV. The Xperia Z2 is powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 801 chipset with four Krait 400 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and with a slight bump now the device has 3GB of RAM. The smartphone has IP58 certification means it can be submerged and work under water.
The smartphone has also got a new camera 20.7MP with 4K video shooting capability at 3fps speed and will offer number of new effects. The camera also features the the same 1/2.3″ sensor with 27mm G Lens with f/2.0 aperture. The main new effect is Timeshift which shoots videos at 720p resolution at 30fps speed and next one is Background defocus and a dedicated mode for Vines.
Despite the size increase, the device is thinner and lighter compared to the Z1 and beefier 3,200mAh battery . Now the device weighs only at 158g that is about 15g less than the Z1.
On the other hand, the Xperia M2 is mid-end Android smartphone with not that impressive 4.8″ TFT display with 540×960 pixels resolution. The smartphone is powered by Snapdragon 400 chipset with a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor coupled with Adreno 305 GPU and 1 GB of RAM. The smartphone has 8GB internal memory that can be expanded via microSD card.
Sony Xperia M2 also sports an 8MP camera with Sony’s Exmor RS sensor and a single-LED flash and it is capable of shooting videos at 1080p resolution.
The device is coming with range of connectivity features which include 3G with HSPA, GPS with GLONASS, NFC, Wi-Fi with DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM radio. On the software side, the Sony Xperia M2 runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean butt it may get an update, though no words about it.
Finally pricing, there is no word on Xperia M2 pricing, but the flagship Xperia Z2 is priced at €600 / £600 and both devices will be available in White, Black and Purple. The release date of the Xperia Z2 is set to March. Sony will bundle an advanced headset with the device, the Sony MDR-NC31EMwith digital noise cancellation that will normally cost you £40.
