Microsoft launches Surface Pro 3; Specs and Price

Microsoft held its most anticipated surface event in NYC today and certainly as the name suggests it was to introduce brand new Surface tablet dubbed Microsoft Surface 3 which this time comes big, thin and powerful than its previous model like Surface Pro 2. The tablet comes pre-loaded with Windows 8 and packs a battery large enough to last almost a day.

Panos Panay, Corporate vice president of Surface Computing at Microsoft said that “there’s a little bit more to this product,”  and introduced several new features and uses of new Surface.

“Let’s take a step back for a minute and let’s deal with some reality,” Panay said, “the tablet was supposed to kill the laptop. That was supposed to happen.”

He also suggested that “96 percent of people who own an iPad also own a laptop,” suggested Panay, indicating that the new Surface Pro 3 is to replace your laptop with its efficiency and features.

Design-wise, the tablet has got noticeable  changes starting from its thickness. The new device is just 9.1mm thick while keeping the device as wide as laptop with 12-inch display, so that you feel the laptop like tablet in essence without compromising its efficiency and power under the hood. The tablet weighs just At 800g that is not far from i Pad 3 with 10-inch screen. So holding the Surface Pr 3 with one hand will not be that hard. The Surface Pro 3 looks a bit thinner than MacBook Air  and Panos Panay pointed out that the screen resolution was much better than the Air.

In the back the Surface Pro 3 kickstand comes with 3 rest angles including 150 degrees for easier writing. The device should feel good when using like laptops as it has great flexibility.

Under the hood, the tablet is extreme as it can fit a Core i7 Intel processor  with an active cooling and HD 4400 graphics. The device is powered by optional Core i3/i5/i7 processor and sports a 12″  color-calibrated display with ClearType tech and aspect ratio of 3:2. The display has 2160 x 1440 pixels of resolution and 216 ppi density. The tablet supports up to 8GB of RAM and storage options range from 64 to 512 gigabytes.

The Surface Pro 3 also sports two 5MP camera, one in the back  and on in the front paired with microphones on both sides. The camera can shoot videos at 1080p at 30 frames per second. In terms of connectivity, the device has a microSD card slot, as well as a USB 3.0 and Mini Display ports. The tablet can offer up to 9 hours of web-browsing at a single charge

In terms of accessories, the Surface Pro 3 will be offered with a Surface Pen dandled in the box  and Type Cover for which you will have to shell out some extra bucks ($129.99). There will also be a docking station priced at $199.99.

Finally pricing and availability, the Surface Pro 3 with a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, will cost $799,  while the tablet with a Core i5 model , twice the RAM and storage space will be sold for $1299.  The Surface Pro 3 with Core i7 configuration, 8GB of RAM and either 256 or 512 GB of storage will cost you $1549 or $1949 respectively.

The tablet looks to be a nice alternative to Macbook Air. The tablet has an impressive design and specs under the hood  and those who are interested in robust tablet which can offer a productive day should find appealing.
