Samsung launches premium-looking Galaxy Alpha with Metal Frame
Finally Samsung is also going premium in design. Unlike most of its smartphones including Galaxy S5, the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha is coming with a metallic frame around it. The device had been on rumor and the company has finally taken the wrap off the device. Samsung calls it “the evolution of Galaxy Design,” adding that it shows a “new design approach” for the company.
Frame on the Alpha looks a bit like Apple’s iPhone aluminum. It seems that Samsung is taunting Apple by adapting the frame that almost looks like Apple’s. However, the device has retained the removable faux leather back that you find on Galaxy S5. Samsung also claimed the Alpha is its slimmest device to date at a 6.7mm thick and weighs in just 115g. The smartphone measures 132.4 x 65.5 that is almost size the recently launched Galaxy S5 mini. And overall shape of the device is not far from its flagship Galaxy S5. The Alpha will be available variety of colors, black, white, gold, and blue.
Despite the premium look and metal frame, the device stands just below the high-end devices in terms of its specifications under the hood. The Alpha sports a 4.7″ Super AMOLED screen with 720p HD display, not Full HD though. Smartphone is powered by Exynos 5 Octa four Cortex-A15 cores running at 1.8GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.3GHz. You won’t find it slow as the device packs enough RAM, 2GB and multitasking should be smoother. However, you will be stick with 32GB of storage as the device has no microSD card slot for further expansion.
Camera department includes a primary 12MP camera capable of shooting videos at 2160p@30fps and a 2.1MPfront-facing camera for video calls. It also features LED flash and autofocus and other camera features you would expect on a premium device.
For connectivity, the smartphone has LTE Cat. 6 connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0. Powering all these is a relatively small battery, 1,860mAh. And you will get all the latest Android goodies, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat right out of the box with TouchWiz on top, which includes S Health and Ultra-low power mode.
Finally the pricing and availability, unfortunately Samsung hasn’t revealed exact release date of the release, but some info online points to September 12th and pricing around RUB 25,000 that is about $690 / €515. The device will be available in 150 countries. So take a look at the video below and drop yours thoughts in the box.
