HTC Desire Eye is a Selfie Phone with 13MP Camera, S801 Chipset
After several leaks and rumors, HTC has launched its new smartphone dubbed HTC Desire Eye. The smartphone boasting 13MP wide-angle cameras on both the front and back not only does it have a high-quality front camera, it also bundles a new suite of apps specially designed for snapping selfies. The Desire Eye can be seen as an upgraded version of HTC Desire 820 that has similar design.
The HTC Eye Experience software will also make its way to HTC One smartphones in the coming month. The feature is expected to come to the following models: HTC One (M7), HTC One (M8), HTC One (E8), HTC One mini, HTC One mini 2, HTC One Remix, HTC One Max, HTC Desire 612, and HTC Desire 816 in the coming months.
In terms of specs, HTC’s new smartphone sports dual-color LED flashes on both the front and rear sides and boasts a 5.2 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, and an IPX7 waterproof design that enables it to withstand water up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 2GB of RAM.The device has 16GB of built-in storage, expandable by microSD cards (up to 128GB) and 2,400mAh battery.
Furthermore, HTC Desire Eye offers Boomsound stereo front-facing speakers. And the device runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with the latest Sense UI atop.
For connectivity, the smartphone offers LTE connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX, NFC and a microUSB port.
The HTC Eye Experience software is coming with some new features such as Autoselfie mode that snaps a picture by holding the phone steady for a few seconds, Split Capture that lets you shoot videos at the same time with front and rear camera and Crop-Me-In creates a single photo with you photoshopped into the back camera image. HTC showed an example of a mountain climber taking picture of both himself and the peak he’s climbing toward.
Apart from high resolution selfie, the phone with 13MP camera will also offer high-quality video call experience that no other phone has ever offered so far. The camera is capable to track up to four faces and keep them in place, so you don’t have to worry about your position and this feature even works with other video calls like Skype.
With large front-facing camera and a large screen, the device is not at all the compact device. The smartphone measures 151.7 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm.
HTC also bringing the new Zoe editing tool with new features. The app offers collaborative video editing and it integrates with RE, HTC’s new action camera. THe app is still in Beta and new content engine will be launched later this year. Interestingly, the Zoe is not just for HTC devices, but will also be available for other Android devices as well as iOS later this year.
HTC Desire Eye in the US will be exclusive to AT&T at least at launch . However pricing and release date are yet to be revealed. In the UK Three will be the only carrier to offer the selfie phone. Three has also announced that it will also be offering Re Camera which the company announced alongside Desire Eye.
