Windows 10 Anniversary Update; How to Disable Cortana Once and for All

Microsoft released latest update for its Windows 10 in the last week and being excited about new features and bug fixes, you may have already got on board. However, the anniversary update also brings a lot of issues or sneeky tweakings that you don’t want such as Cortana which in the previous version could be disable easily.

With the AU, Microsft has decided to make it a bit difficult to turn off Cortana. The Cortana collects your usage data and acts like your virtual personal assistant. Apart from being your personal assistant it also sends your data to a remote cloud server that you may not want for some privacy reasons and want to turn Cortana off once and for all.

If you are on Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise version, just follow the video below.

If you are using Windows 10 Home premium, it is even more difficult to deactivate Cortana. Unlike Pro and enterprise version, you will need to do it via Windows Registry edit to disable Cortana.

To do that, click Win key+ R and type in regedit and click ok.  It opens the Windows Registry Editor. Just navigate to the folder called Windows Search.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search

If you don’t find the folder, just right-click on its parent folder called Windows and click New ->Key, name it Windows Search. Now right-click the windows search folder -> New DWORD (32-bit) Value and call this AllowCortana and set it to 0. Once finished all either log off and on or reboot and the changes should take effect.
