How to install Windows 10 Preview in VirtualBox or PC in a Few Minutes
Microsoft announced its latest iteration of Windows dubbed Windows 10 and the company has invited those interested to test technical preview. The preview version has gone live and you can sign up for the Insider Program and download the Windows 10 Preview now.
The company has already detailed what the new OS will bring and how it is different from its current version of OS, Windows 8.1. You can read more about it here .
If you are interested to participate the program, you can install the OS on your system. There are two options to install it,
- Update your PC to run Windows 10 Preview
- Install the Windows 10 Preview on Virtual machine like Oracle VirtualBox.
Unless you have a spare machine, I would recommend the second one because once you installed Windows 10 Preview on your system, you would not be able to use recovery partition of on your PC to switch back to your previous version of Windows and you will need disc or USB with previous Windows to get your machine back to previous version like Windows 8. Microsoft also advises not to install the Preview version on your work machine as it could break the system itself sometimes or you may not be satisfied with its performance.
- Before you install / upgrade to Windows 10 Preview, make sure you back up your data.
- To install Windows 10, you need either of Windows 10 ISO files and a DVD or USB drive large enough to hold preview data.
- A spare computer or Oracle VirtualBox on your system.
- If you haven’t yet installed VirtualBox, you can download it from Oracle VM VirtualBox

To install the preview on your PC, start with unzipping ISO file to your system and copy the data to the DVD or USB drive. You can also use some tool like ImgBurn to unzip the ISO file or mount it within the OS.
Once the DVD or USB is ready with installation data, insert the disk or USB device into your PC that you want to install it on. If you are installing the preview on a working PC running Windows 8 or 7, just double click the Windows 10 setup.exe file from the installation media. If not, boot your system from installation media and follow the installation Wizard.
Installing or upgrading Windows 10 is pretty straightforward and installation wizard will walk you through the process. Once everything is done, your system will reboot and Windows 10 Preview is ready.
